Review of Lady Vengeance (2005) by Matt S — 05 Jun 2009
The only thing that kept this film from getting 5 stars was a few unintentionally awkward scenes. I think Chan-wook Park had far too many crying scenes in this one, not to mention direct attempts to win the audience over with dark themes like rape and child murders.
With that said and done, the rest of the film was well worth 2hrs of my time. As a matter of fact, Yeong-ae Lee's performance alone may alone be enough to keep a person watching. In each of her scenes she leaves you waiting and anticipating her motives.
Similar to some of Chan-wook Park's other films he uses a lot of experimental cinematography, most of them work and look nice...but some of them don't. Those that do, give the film a style and direction that you just don't see in many other films, which is perhaps why "Lady Vengeance" is so refreshing.
For those who like "flashy" films that can still tell a great story, "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" is for you.
