Review of Lady Vengeance (2005) by Martin D — 18 Feb 2010
Park Chan-wook's stylish final installment to his Vengance trilogy, pays homage to "Female Prisoner Scoprion", but builds toward a climax equal parts "Last House On The Lest", "Hostel" and "12 Angry Men", finding a fascinating variation on the traditional revenge tale.
Less violent than "Oldboy" the film prefers supsense, dark comedy, and character development, to noirish twists, though many "Oldboy's" shock and awe tactics remain. Visually Chan-wook is masterfully able to evoke a modern blend of Japenese extremity and French new wave, without either comprising the other.
If youv'e seen the more popular "Oldboy", "Sympathy For Lady Venganece" and the similarly under-rated "Thirst", are great follow ups, to one of the past decades most unique emerging talents.
