Review of Lady Vengeance (2005) by Joe G — 16 Oct 2010
A good film that has some great scenes and a particularly bad ass protagonist and slimy antagonist. If you've watched the first two films in this vengeance trilogy, you'll get a small thrill seeing all the cameos the actors from those movies make.
That being said, this one isn't quite as good as the first two for two reasons: 1. it delves too deeply in the artsy and unrealistic. Actually, it's interesting to see the progression of this throughout the trilogy: Mr Vengeance had gritty realism, Oldboy had a mix of realism and style, and Lady Vengeance is pretty much all style.
this makes it slightly less engaging to watch, at least to me. 2. This film's take on vengeance runs completely contrary to that of the first two. Where the first two showed revenge as pointless and damaging, this one shows it as cleansing.
The main character is right for wanting and taking revenge, and this makes the theme run the cliché of the revenge genre. Again, it's not a bad film, but falls in comparison to the first two.
