Review of Lady Vengeance (2005) by Alexi T — 01 Jul 2009
Visually pleasant but a tad inconsistent. Oldboy is definitely a stronger film but if you enjoy Park Chan-wook or revenge in general then this film should please you either way. Though its build is rewarding and a number of scenes are quite memorable, ultimately you get left with the impression that something was hollow on the inside, that the movie itself was gilded.
But this feeling of emptiness is slight and the film's outward beauty might be more than a match for its other deficiencies. Word of advice though: pay close attention because at times it tends to let go of your hand and forces you to make conclusions and connections on your own.
The nutshell: a primal waltz set to Vivaldi, with just a flair for the artistically melodramatic--and it lacks just that one little piece of the puzzle to make it perfect--but I can hardly give something so cool and so swift anything less than my undivided attention.
