Review of Lady Vengeance (2005) by Paul R — 04 Mar 2011
Chan-Wook Park (Director of Oldboy) treats us to another instalment of his Vengeance trilogy. It's kind of like Oldboy's little sister and although not as good as Oldboy, it certainly holds its own.
It's quite a different film. Whereas Oldboy has some dark comedy moments, Lady Vengeance is subtler and dare I say, slower. We follow Geum-ja, who is released from a 13-year prison stretch for the murder of a young boy.
She goes on a mission for both redemption and revenge as she delves into the lives of her estranged daughter and attempts to find who she thinks are the real killers of the boy. It is not as violent as the other films in the trilogy but is amazing to watch and the cinematography is beautiful in its richness.
If you like foreign films this is one to add to your list. It's another great showcase for Korean film.
