Review of Lady Sings the Blues (1972) by Randy E — 20 Dec 2004
Diana Ross is astonishing in her first film role. If you do not believe me just watch this gem from 1972. I'll admit it is not the complete truth on Holiday's life but Miss Ross more than makes up for it with her performance.
Ross was nominated for the Best Actress Oscar but lost to Liza in Cabaret. I guess it was a toss up. Ross should have won though. They say that Barry Gordy's egotistical campaign lost it for her. Holiday was a heroin addict and Ross shows the pain through and through.
The film clocks in at almost 3 hrs. so be prepared. Ross of course does her own singing at the height of her long career.
