Review of Lady Macbeth (2016) by Aleksandra C — 23 May 2017
A fascinating film... not without flaws, but dariing for its amalgamatin of past masterpieces. Remains true to the russian novel rathe than the equally flawed and over-worked shakespearean 'scottish play'.
A racial (racist?) twist is added, peeumably to make it 'topical' and qualify for politically charged funding decisions in right-wing UK. Starts weakly, with much 'trooble-at-mill' northern sterotyping, and blatant DH Lawrence borrowing.
Introduction of strong black castings and a cute half-blood child all help the plot along to its gory grimly LadyMacbeth climax and a suitable, slightly russian ending. More Onegin than Tarkovsky, and a sad Tatiana Macbeth at the end contemplates a future with her conscience.
Good stuff, nasterful but not a masterpiece.
