Review of Lady in the Water (2006) by Eric B — 24 Mar 2010
This is a fantastic story and film that bombed in the box office for 3 reasons:
1) Trailers portrayed it as some kind of horror film, which it is not. The first audiences of this film went expecting a scary thriller flick and were disappointed.
2) The unique story doesn't fit into any conventional category (thus the difficulty in marketing it in the first place).
3) Most profoundly, it was panned by many professional film critics, most of whom bizarrely reveal how outraged they are that the arrogant film critic character in the movie makes gross mistakes in deciphering the mystery and dies a violent death.
Like one of the film critics who loved this movie points out - ignore the critics on this one. It's a wonderful mystery that pulls back the skin of the world and finds a hidden force that must be deciphered by the characters in the movie. I've already said too much, but if you enjoy fairy tales or magical realism you will probably love this film.
