Review of Lady in the Water (2006) by Matthew P — 17 Jul 2011
Shyamalan's last good film before he started making shit. A lot of people draw that line a lot earlier on in his career but I love them all up to and including The Village and I think this one is good, if not great.
I do love Bryce Dallas Howard though. Shyamalan making himself the genius writer/saviour was a bit up himself. And the Freddy Rodriguez pumping one arm thing is stupid. But the nymph world that's hinted at is cool, the creatures we do see quite creepy (the wolves and the monkeys), and Giamatti does a good job.
This is like Shyamalan's eulogy, since his ability as a filmmaker effectively died after this. I'm still hoping it will come back.
