Review of Lady in the Water (2006) by Barry N — 03 Aug 2011
I'm still not entirely sure why this film is hated upon, because I think this film is very entertaining and thought provoking. It's not up to par with other high praised dramas, absolutely, but I don't think this movie deserves to be shunned the way that it has. To me, the film felt like a great merging of a fairy tale in the modern world and pulls it off mostly well. While I'm on that subject, not everything works. The scene with the little kid reading the cereal boxes and predicting the future, that was stupid, and the scene with the critic being eaten by the creature, that was unnecessary and unintentionally funny, but other than those as well as a couple of other scenes, I thought the movie worked surprisingly well. The suspense in this film actually does build up to a satisfying climax and the build up in this film is really good. I also felt that the acting in this film is pretty good, but nothing Oscar worthy. I thought that the film knew exactly what it meant to be, a fantasy film that had a sense of majesty, awe and innocence. Not a masterpiece, but it's still an interesting and pleasant film.
7.6/10.
