Review of Lady in the Water (2006) by Howie V — 13 Jan 2011
Lady in the Water is a great story. Top notch. I liked everything except the lady and the water. How does "Cleveland" [a doctor / a man of science] buy in - or sell out - to the mythology? What about options B and C? You find a naked girl in the pool, in the middle of the Philadelphia night, and you're going with this secret decoder ring crap? I have some land in the Philippines I'd love to talk to you about. There's a disconnect in this movie that serves as a huge distraction.
That said, there is enough raw material to turn this into a top notch-er story. Giamatti does a fantastic job playing the haunted-yet-nurturing character. I bet that apartment complex is just teaming with drama to work off of. Imagine the possibilities. I like the underlying moral; that we don't really know our purpose until we know. It does give you something to chew on but it's not enough. Far from it. Be not mistaken. Lady in the Water is not even in the vicinity of The Sixth Sense. Thumb down!
