Review of Lady in the Water (2006) by Mitchell B — 01 Sep 2017
It seems not too many "got" this film. I did! Most writers would, and I found it a delight!
To me, it's an allegory about the writing process. (For allegory: think animal farm - Does anything, plot-wise surprise you in Animal Farm? Does the whole story seem absurd on the surface? But still you get chocked up (SPOILER) when Boxer is taken off to the glue factory. You still find humor and a firm plot in the, need I say, story.).
Here's the plot:
The story needs to get finished; all odds are on it not getting completed. In the end, success is achieved! I found it uplifting.
Here's some of the cast (mostly prominently cast, the universe of the writer's mind):
The author:the aspirational mind - the writer(Giamatti):the cathartic mind - the critic:the critically conditioned part of the mind - the Narf:the story - the seven sisters: the nurturing part of the mind (or nurturing people in the author's life) - the Scrunt:all that shit that keeps you from getting a project done - etc., etc.
A perfect tale to fix in a kid's mind at a young age (if that is really how the story was created.).
Gee-whiz: and all these movie critics getting mad at the critic being the only fatality - give me a break! - the mind has to keep killing its own critic off repeatedly to get any creative work done at all.
Worth a look for the rarefied :-).
