Review of Lady Bird (2017) by Nancy J — 04 Dec 2017
For starters, I agree that this movie does not deserve a rotten review -- it is too good for anyone to think it's bad. But, on the other hand, no it is not the greatest film in the history of cinema.
With that out of the way, I want to mention that I am not an Irish Catholic female youth. So, on paper, I really have nothing to relate to in this film; however, it is filmed and acted so damn well that it didn't matter.
How Greta Gerwig has been holding out her directorial skills for so long is beyond me. We all know Saoirse Ronan is a star, so it is just part of the territory for her (the surprise was the absolutely fantastic work from Laurie Metcalf). The color palette, scene editing, cinematography were all so fantastic. I LOVED how Gerwig would linger on scenes, where you'd normally think there could be a cut, to truly pull the viewer into the environment -- akin to Steve Mcqueen III (albeit in a different context).
Overall, it was a fantastic coming-of-age story that pulls at the heartstrings but also has a huge heart of its own. (Also, the last 15 minutes of the film were some of the most affecting I've seen all year. A great way to close out the story in my mind).
