Review of Lady Bird (2017) by Lee S — 15 Dec 2017
I'm amending my original post after discussions with other friends. I agree with them that it was refreshing to see flawed characters, instead of the usual Hollywood fluff But i'm not changing my rating.
I had seen it. with two women friends, we all had the same complaints: did not like main character,, she was a poser, dishonest, unscrupulous, claimed she wanted to study math, but paid no attention in class and cheated, very immature; her mother drove us nuts with her passive-aggressiveness; loved the dad, Mother Superior, the drama coaches.
The brother's girlfriend very good, but given little to do or say. Was the brother adopted? No explanation, since he was Latino. Why did the first drama teacher leave? Why would two boys be kissing in an unlocked bathroom? Lady Bird jumps from car, and next scene has cast on arm.
A Thanksgiving dinner in boyfriend's grandmothers house, and all we see is Lady Bird folding napkins. Seems like this movie must have been longer and got drastically cut to fit, or script was too long to shoot the whole thing.
I hate writing in this cramped box, can't see everything. We had such high expectations for this movie. Two of us heard interview with the writer/director that piqued our curiosity.
