Review of Lady Bird (2017) by Jess E — 12 Feb 2018
Lady Bird is a phenomenally accurate depiction of the relationship between a teenage girl and her mother. Obviously, this is a coming-of-age story for Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson, detailing her journey through her senior year of high school and all the trouble she manages to get herself into, but underlying all of this is the troubling conflict she retains with her mother. This idea of conflict, a real, destructive conflict between mother and daughter, is something that not a lot of Hollywood films dare to touch. The mother-daughter relationship is one that I believe society has made sacred, so I applaud the risks this movie takes to accurately depict this relationship as one that its audience will genuinely relate with.
Every character is beautifully portrayed, the individual actors and actresses who played each character represent the different "somebodies" one meets throughout high school wonderfully. The story is compelling, the troubles and challenges Lady Bird faces in dealing with the contrast between her upbringing and her newfound independence are eye-opening when seeing them on a screen.
I could go on, but overall, this movie was beautifully shot, written, produced, and directed, and one I would gladly see again and again and again.
