Review of Lady Bird (2017) by Scott W — 25 Feb 2018

I smiled throughout this movie. It's a really good portrait of a teenager struggling to find her identity and her very complicated relationship with her mother. The scenes between Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf are uncomfortable, but there's good balance with comic relief at school.

I like that they didn't portray all of the Catholic school teachers as one note characters. I did think some of the kids at school were a little too much like caricatures (like Kyle and Jenna). But it's a worthy Oscar nominee.

There is definitely some John Hughes influence in this one (especially Pretty in Pink). I'm looking forward to seeing what Greta Gerwig does next.
