Review of Lady Bird (2017) by Steven K — 04 Mar 2018
This movie has some great, natural acting. Sometimes the dialogue borders into "too clever" and the bird herself seems to suffer from a certain tendency to tossing off witty lines like mini-firecrackers, but it's meant to be part of her character's personality.
Dad was totally believable; he seemed exhausted with the high drama around him as well as beaten down by older age and the economic reality of the times. Mom? Well, what can I say? She is meant to be annoying, but she is far more than that.
I know of few nurses that would have the energy to participate in this much drama with her daughter with the commitment this character portrays. She said that her own mother was an "abusive alcoholic"; perhaps that is why it constantly seemed like this woman wold've been better off having a few glasses of wine and chilling out instead of driving herself insane over petty details and over-criticizing her young daughter.
I enjoyed hhe movie to some extent. I just feel like I have seen it before, or perhaps several times before.. For me it was a case of cinematic deja vu, neither a "meh" nor anything spell-binding.
