Review of Lady Bird (2017) by Sevenother P — 09 Mar 2018
Enjoyable slow burner with an emotional whammy of a third act.
Charming performances all round but Laurie Metcalf was truly something special.
Not for everybody and I felt it a bit flat in places, the story takes place in the final months of Ladybird's Senior Year.
It's a story about complicated relationships, in particular the Mother/Daughter dynamic and how, as we grow up, we come to understand and maybe even become our parents.
All of this is delivered in such a subtle way, without being either condescending nor abstract. The characters were mostly relatable except for the father but I can't tell whether this is due to the performance or that the character was more of a closed book; possibly both.
Either way, it's worth watching if you're willing to put in the effort of paying attention.
