Review of Lady and the Tramp (1955) by Aubrey B — 18 Oct 2011
Regardless of whether we like them or not, there are moments in Disney films that stay with us for no "real logical reason". Lady and Tramp sharing the plate of spaghetti, where they both end up chewing the same string and accidentally kissing will stay in your mind, even if you haven't actually seen the movie (most likely you've at least seen the clip).
As a whole, this movie was moderately enjoyable. Like all Disney movies, the main characters were voiced by Americans, with foreigners playing the minor roles. The two heroes fell in love without really getting to know each other... they all live happily ever after.... If you're looking for something new, Lady and the Tramp really isn't it, though I do have to give it congrats for actually showing Lady and Tramp's pups. "Happily ever after" in every other Disney movie in its era has no actual epilogue, while L and T does have one.
I see numerous comparisons between this movie and Beauty and the Beast. Minus the fact that their names are alike in stature, the beauties are, well, beauties, who live in a somewhat happy home, both Lady and Belle are heroines who do at some point need rescuing from their rugged protector... Tramp and Beast are considered scum, they protect the females (as they instantaneously became smitten)... all is well by the end of the film.... Pretty much every single Disney movie in existence has comparisons to other works of the same company, but I think Lady and the Tramp is most thoroughly connected to Beauty and the Beast.
