Review of Ladies in Lavender (2004) by Tom S — 30 Jan 2006
Ladies In Lavender (2005) - "I'm sure he ain't got nothing I ain't seen before." - Dorcas.
Two elderly sisters in pre-World War II England co-exist in near perfect harmony until they discover a young man washed up on the beach in front of their house. When they rush down to check him out, they find he's still alive. He's beautiful as well - which awakens Ursula's long dormant heart and Janet's motherly instincts. Janet focuses on nursing Andrea back to health while Ursula struggles with her desire. It's not long until his foreign speech and his staggering skill with a violin soon convinces the sisters that he is a treasure to be coveted. The down-to-earth housemaid Dorcas, played by Natascha McElhone, is immune to the swirling emotions of the sisters. Her no nonsense approach opposes the sister's doting, making for some really funny moments.
A beautiful young artist named Olga hears his violin playing and enters the mix as she begins her quest to find out more about Andrea. The sisters jealously work to keep the two of them apart while Olga herself is pursued by middle-aged Doctor who attends to Andrea. Meanwhile, the authorities, at first enamored with the young man, are soon influenced by pre-war mania and begin to have their suspicions.
A charming story, Maggie Smith's performance as Janet is excellent.
