Review of Labyrinth (2012) by Byron B — 12 Oct 2011
It seemed obvious that Henson was trying to spin a modern fantasy tale out of the framework of The Wizard of Oz. Dorothy is a much younger character in the Oz books compared to Judy Garland in the '39 movie, but the movies at that time could get away with a more innocent character despite a 17 year old actress.
Based on the dialog written for Jennifer Connelly it seemed like a younger girl was intended, but she was around 16 when she played the role of Sarah. Was she supposed to be a teenager of the 80's? I didn't like her performance that much.
Bowie is the glam Goblin King, Jareth. I almost thought the role was being played by Tim Curry (Frank-N-Furter) a couple times. The three companions who help Sarah along her journey (again like The Wizard of Oz), Hoggle, Ludo and Didymus are fun characters.
A lot of the puppet wizardry is amazing and good for a laugh. None of the musical numbers stuck with me though. I found this movie very strange and couldn't help but think that by seeing it for the first time now that I'm almost 30 I just do not understand why some people love it so much.
Sure its style and creativity are unique, but it is confused about its intended audience.
