Review of Labyrinth (2012) by Blake P — 16 Jan 2016
It's been a long time since I've seen this, so I've forgotten a lot of the details. This is an odd fantasy movie: quirky, creative, and a bit weird, starring David Bowie as the Goblin King and Jennifer Connelly as teenager Sarah.
Some kind of bad goblin magic is at work. When Sarah is stuck babysitting her baby brother and wishes to not have a little brother, the Goblin King is listening, and the baby disappears into his goblin realm. Sarah then enters the Goblin King's magic world and his labyrinth to find the baby. While many aspects of the movie don't make a lot of sense, it is an adventure. Sarah crosses paths with a lot of strange creatures in the labyrinth, creatively made and acted puppets, by puppetmaster Jim Henson. Some of them are cute and nice; others not so nice. I think this puppet show is for tweens through adults, not little kids.
In the end, when Sarah seems ready to win, the Goblin King doesn't play fair. Of course, she wins anyway and gets her brother back.
It's also a musical; we get to see David Bowie sing some songs while wearing his funky Goblin King costume. If you like Bowie's music and/or unique style, that's a plus.
