Many girls turned into fan-girls, and sparked interest in the things now touted at Comic-Con etc, thanks to this movie! I think in general most people don't understand all the psychological themes running throughout, the companion book reveals a lot of it beautifully.

Yes, its 80's style, yes some of the songs are cheesy, but ask any girl who saw this film growing up and you will most likely be met with a great passion for this coming of age tale.
