Review of Labor Day (2013) by Eytan D — 28 May 2014
Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin are always great to watch, but "Labor Day" serves as a big disappointment from Jason Reitman, the mastermind behind "Up in the Air" and "Juno".
Gone is the director's sense of wit and instead, we get a film that is ultimately indecisive. Not only is the plot device rather pulpy and in the vein of Nicholas Sparks, but Reitman doesn't know which perspective he wants the story to focus on.
Therefore, the movie comes out muddled, melodramatic, and worst of all, not very compelling. "Labor Day" is watchable at best, but we can mark it down as a failed adaptation of a novel and the rare misstep of an incredibly talented director.
