It seems to me that most of the negative reviews i've read about this film have more to do with the conclusions the reviewers have drawn regarding the foibles of the real-life characters. May I remind you that the reality of contemporary talented artists is tainted by substance abuse in a seemingly increasing pattern yet those of us who will judge these artists still enjoy the fruits of their labors - which is not to say that what they do is justified - but it happens to be a factor in the reality in the lives of, not only the most creative people, but in society as we know it today..not all creative people, of course, but a significant number. So let's skip to the chase....the storyline seems to be 'disjointed' to reviewers who seem to be unable or unintelligent enough that they cannot read the dates that are given on screen in this movie. Yes, there are transitions which are used in this film but they are quite clearly shown onscreen with the use of dates when they occur. Apparently the creators of this film are making the sad assumption that the audience can actually read and follow the transitions as they are used in the film.

This motion picture is one of the most compelling and moving films I have seen in a long time.

Marion Cotillard can be given very, very significant credit for helping to make it so. What an amazing performance!
