Review of La Vie en Rose (2007) by Adam G — 25 Sep 2010
Iâ??ve been a huge fan of Edith Piafâ??s music for a long time now, from her lesser known songs to the hugely recognised â??Non, Je Ne Regrette Rienâ??. Even if youâ??re not a fan, itâ??s hard to not know who Edith Piaf is. You canâ??t help but come across the legendary footage of her performances when youâ??re growing up, so much so for me that sheâ??s always been present, even before I bought any of her recordings.
Marion Cotillard is simply stunning in the lead role, and no one can deny that she fully deserved the Academy Award, which she won for her performance in this film. She presents an innocence which you rarely see in actresses today, and innocence which makes her performance utterly believable. Itâ??s certainly no easy challenge for someone to make you think that they are the role theyâ??re playing, especially when portraying someone as beloved and well known as Edith Piaf.
One of the many high points of this film for me was the music. Her voice is instantly recognisable and the music itself (as stated by many of the characters) takes you to Paris. It certainly reminded me of why I love the city so much!
Itâ??s films like this which make you wonder why some people donâ??t like watching world cinema.
An absolutely excellent film!
