Review of La Vie en Rose (2007) by Jim S — 12 Jul 2011
A real curate's egg. Major flaw: not enough music, and, for my tastes, Piaf's voice was limited by her repertiore beyond the couple of most famous songs. Brilliant acting, or something like it, but the film didn't grip, considering Piaf's amazing life.
To my amazement, I felt less involved and less emotionally affected than by Webber/Rice's Evita, a story with some parallels. In other words, telling the story in biopic fashion really does requires the use of Piaf's own voice, and the decision to use a lip synching / visual impression with superb make up to reflect the ageing and degeneration rather than using the music in some other way made for a disappointing experience.
It was also quite long, with too many Piaf tantrums and shouting.
