Review of La Strada (1954) by Will M — 10 Jun 2008
Yeah, I guess it's good, and Anthony Quinn is wonderful, but this is too cute by half for my taste. The comparison with Chaplin is apt; this film shares many of his weaknesses -- a tendency to treat women like noble infants, a substitution of fairy-tale poverty for actual problems.
One can see the roots of Roberto Benigni's mama mia treacle in early Fellini.
