Review of La Strada (1954) by Aaron A — 08 Feb 2011
"What a funny face! Are you a woman, really? Or an artichoke?".
The story follows the plight of gentle Gelsomina, who's sold by her mother to a bullying circus performer, only to have a clown win her heart and ignite a doomed love triangle.
No one directs like Federico Fellini, the two films I have seen from him keep the audience's attention with a unique sense of humor. This humor makes his films very watchable. But underneath all the humor filled encounters is a narrative style that is representational to all master filmmakers.
La Strada is no different. Though the film is very funny, it examines a very serious problem that millions of individuals experience. I found the film to be very challenging, as the lead female protagonist makes decisions that somewhat baffle my mind, though this is precisely the point of the picture (at least thats what I get out of it).
Fellini's La Strada has the director's signature humor, but there's a challenging and serious message being delivered. Highly Recommended.
