Review of L.A. Story (1991) by Jeremy N — 16 May 2008
There's enough charm, whimsy and just plain silliness in the 90-minute runtime of L.A. Story to last three movies. Martin, who clearly loves every ounce of that city, manages a screenplay that is genuinely romantic and surreal, yet not remotely unbalanced. Between obvious cliches about Los Angeles (in to which Martin has breathed new, hilarious energy), there are moments of genuine warmth and honesty - almost all of which pay off. Even his one tired joke about the English - that they can't get used to driving on the right in the U.S. - pays off in inventive ways.
It's Martin at his absolute best - only half-shedding absurdist humour and embracing the same kind of sweetness that empowered Roxanne.
Mick Jackson's direction oversells a joke or two, but very little from detract from Martin's take on A Midsummer Night's Dream.
