Review of La Promesse (1996) by Rebecca M — 12 Sep 2007
I remain a loyal, strong admirer of the brothers Dardenne. They have an ability to shoot a film as if they are not present, so as to let us into a world of realism. They also have an uncanny ability to show hope in the midst of this realism (an even harder feat!).
In this film, the incomparable Jeremie Renier and Olivier Gourmet (who frequently make appearances in Dardenne brothers films) shine with un-selfconscious portrayals of an underworld which takes advantage of the vulnerable.
..and the power of a promise to lead one into compassion. Human connections in spite of the circumstances. Believably redemptive (as I have come to expect from these film-makers).
