It's easy to see why some might dislike this unapologetically retro paean to a Los Angeles that never existed, with its bravura camera work, Technicolor Edward Hopper production design and winsome performances, but it's a film that grows on you and has a bitter-sweet poignancy as it becomes ever clearer that it's as much a lament for what America has lost as it is the simple tale of an affair that ends.
Wonderful jazz soul score, and unaffected performances from Ryan Gosling and the Betty Boop-faced Emma Stone.
