Review of La La Land (2016) by Nicole E — 24 Feb 2017
This film is PURE JOY and hits ALL the right beats! Every shot is a cinematic masterpiece. The use of colors and light- amazing :) Character introductions are seamless. Each song has a specific purpose- they never break into song for the heck of it. As usual the chemistry is electric between Emma & Ryan and ooozes naturally. The writing is solid, moving and funny start to finish-you are engaged at every moment. The ending is beautiful and handled so sweetly. Sigh. So many brilliant Easter egg moments to old Hollywood and films throughout. It's about following your dreams and being in love- the doubts that come with both and ultimately the sacrifices you make. This film is just gorgeous and unless you are simply dead inside or musicals are just NOT your thing you will be moved and may shed a tear or two :) It's the sign of a great film when you can't stop thinking about because you are re-running scenes though your head.
Yes, the leads aren't broadway singers/ dancers, but that didn't matter...their performances came across as authentic and genuine. No autotune here folks.
