La La Land harkens back to the musicals of old. It reminds us of the necessity to balance the traditions of our past and the dreams of our future with each step of our present. The songs are soul-piercing as we follow the romance of a musician (Sebastian) and an actress (Mia), both passionate about their dreams.
This is a story not about attaining those dreams, but choosing between one's dreams. Eventually Sebastian and Mia come to a point when they realize they can't go back - they fought for they wanted, or what they thought they wanted, and they had to make sacrifices along the way.
And no one, not even the two of them, believe it was worth it.
