Review of La La Land (2016) by Aria S — 28 Mar 2017
I watched the movie after hearing that it got multiple Academy Awards, so, as you may imagine, my expectations were pretty high.
I was quite disapointed.
This film tried to be too many things in my opinion: a champion for the musical genre, an homage to the old hollywood movies, an alternative rom com, a drama and a comedy. It didn' t really fail on all these counts, but neither did it trully commit to any of them.
The plot is to me the stereotypical hollywood success story that tries and fails to disguise itself as an emotional acount of the rejection and sucrifice in persuit of dreams.
Acting-wise Gosling was good, Stone was better but undeserving of an Oscar.
In the end it was mainly Damien Chazelle' s unconventional direction that saved this movie from being a complete dissapointment. He managed to create visually stunning compositions that are both dreamlike and emotionally impactful. Unfortunately his work is not supported by the other elements of this movie that ends up paling in comparison to his previous work 'Whiplash'.
