Review of La La Land (2016) by Peter B — 30 Mar 2017
I found myself loving the film and feeling enchanted by the first hour, but the second half fell a bit flat for me. Even though the plot has been done to freaking death, La La Land manages to have its own unique voice and brings a certain charm to the material, which reminded me of other great musicals e.
G.: Mary Poppins or Singing in the Rain, though La La Land falls short compared to these classics, it still had this charm and soul that has been lacking in mainstream films for a while now. My problems with the film started after around the 1 hour mark, the story kinda collapses into clichés and becomes quite unoriginal, despite the ending, I really liked how the film conluded.
Overall I think it's a lovely film with a brilliant performance by Emma Stone, great dance numbers and some solid songs.
