Review of La La Land (2016) by Ray M — 22 Feb 2017
Brilliant, breezy tribute to Hollywood's Golden age. It's a whirlwind, bittersweet love story that would be just as great without the (brilliant and memorable) musical numbers. It's not Hairspray or Mama Mia or some overwrought, spit polished nonsense by Andrew Lloyd Webber starring eyes and teeth and not much else, it's honest and intimate and the singing and dancing isn't world class because it's a hollywood (2017) musical, not a broadway musical in a film, so it really feels very different to anything else out there.
It's brilliant, it will hoover up a million Oscars very soon but before all that, la la land gets my first ever five star review. Please swerve fifty shades and watch this instead.
