Review of La Haine (1995) by Michael W — 21 Aug 2008
La Haine is not a film to be missed. If you enjoy the sorts of stories about youths like Kids, Gummo, or City of God you'll love this too. La Haine is the story of three friends, Vinz, Said, and Hubert, who each have their similarities and differences. When a friend of the neighborhoods is beaten by police to near death after a riot, tensions rise to a high. When a gun falls in to the hands of Vinz, things change. Mathieu Kassovitz brilliantly and perfectly captures these three characters in all their shining moments.
This is a story of hate (obviously), poverty, friendship, and respect, among other moral qualities. Kassovitz may not make you like all three of the characters, but he'll make you understand them. Vincent Cassel gives the best performance of the three in my opinion while Hubert Kounde and Said Taghmaoui are exceptional as well. There's not much to say about this incredible film. It will jolt you, engage you, and keep your eyes glued to the screen. It quickly became one of my favorite films of the 90's. The film will blow you away.
