Review of La Haine (1995) by Richard A — 03 Dec 2008
La Haine is one of those films that you see and can't forget, it sticks out in your head amongst a slew of other celluloid fodder you've sat through.
Vincent Cassel turns in an early and memorable role in his acting career as Vinz, a jewish toughguy wannabe who spends his days with his young friends who all live in the "projects" in Paris during a rather intense time of racial violence and riots. Cassel has graced many a memorable film including Irreversible, The Crimson Rivers and Sheitan. He's also married to the incrediably hot as balls Monica Bellucci (who also played his viciously raped girlfriend in Gasper Noe's film Irreversible).
La Haine is an intense urban tale, it slowly unfolds and builds to a quick and intense climax. More than anything its a character study of three friends from completely different ethnic backgrounds and the trials and tribulations of their lives, standard youth activities such stealing cars, smoking drugs and harassing cops (some of who fuck'in deserve it if I may add in my two cents). Great film, find it.
