Review of La Haine (1995) by Jeffrey C — 30 Jun 2012
I feel it is THE urban film. So many films of this genre are too cliche or generic to compete with this. It really redefined what was possible in these types of cinema. The main reason is because it is not really an 'urban' film of course. It is just pure experimental cinema mixed with a reality that just works! The acting is so credible that one believes that the central three amigos seem to have known each other for years before the camera rolled. The cinematography is one the best I have ever seen in a black and white film. The editing is remarkably fresh, even still today. And of course it had such fascinating, heartfelt, true political undertones that never seem forced, and they still remain relevant today all over the globe.
A true CLASSIC.
Ps bizarre that Kassovitz never got near these heights again! I heard that maybe he did not have as much over the final edit as we all think! Just a rumour though.
