Review of La Haine (1995) by Tina T — 09 Sep 2012
This is a movie about youth growing in projects, deprived of many of their rights due to the rough economical situation: normal life conditions, education, work and even a chance to get out of the projects. They face discrimination, they struggle with hate which they sometimes don't know who to address to. They feel very small, insignificant and function less in the society as all of their desires to get out of the projects, their efforts to become better people, and to accomplish something other than becoming gangsters is compromised day by day by the circumstances, such as poverty, greed, low self esteem, war, police, etc. even the ones who have decided to go the other way, take the high road , are tricked into diving in the dirt of the projects by injustice.
This is a simple movie, depicting 24 hours in the life of, a Jewish, Arab, and African youngsters. This is not a special day, its just another day in the projects. Even though the movie is simple it is great. Viewers definitely feel the war these youth are fighting not only outside in the streets but inside, viewers breathe the air their breathing, feel the tension, pressure, injustice the feel.
Although the movie touches such important, moving, and fragile matters directors managed to move the audience without heavy detail oriented tragic and pitty scenes.
