Review of La Dolce Vita (1960) by Darryl J — 22 May 2008
My second Fellini film and once again I'm blown away. Why aren't there directors like this anymore?
From the opening sequence, you know this is gonna be a cinematic treat. It only gets better and better from there. This reminded me of a novel. The story is told in such a fresh and exciting way. It's unlike the normal structure of a movie. This was nonstop entertainment for me at least. Every character was so interesting and original. The entire film had a feeling of boundless energy just like 8 and a half.
Marcello Mastroianni is in top form. His character is so immediately likable. His desperate need to find a sense of meaning and purpose in his life is what drives this film. I would want to talk about it more but I don't wanna reveal major plot points.
Start to finish, this film is perfectly directed by Federico Fellini. He really knows how to use his settings for their full potential. The cinematography is also brilliant. It's a nonstop visual feast for the eyes.
The ending is one of the best to be put on film. So simple yet defines a man's entire life.
