Review of La Dolce Vita (1960) by Joseph F — 12 Mar 2009
One of my favorite films of all time. A look at the the lifestyle of the upper class in Rome told through the emotionally disillusioned eyes of a gossip reporter/struggling writer. Told through 7 episodes that are linked together only though the progression of night to day and Marcello's cast of zombie like bourgeoisie, the film takes you on a ride through it's unique narrative structure and dream like episodes into the not so happy like of the protagonist.
The film does not have any easy answers to Marcello's life, but instead rely heavily on symbolism and coming to terms with life's shortcomings. Brilliantly shot by the master Fellini with unforgettable scenes and an amazing score by Nino Rotti, this is one of his best.
