Review of La Dolce Vita (1960) by Yun Peng H — 13 Jan 2011
After seeing most films of Stanley Kubrick I was almost assured that he is the best director in the world but after Fellini's 8 1/2 and La Dolce Vita I would give it a thought. La Dolce Vita is very genuine and not dramatized film which makes it one of the best I had ever seen.
As I mentioned what makes it special is no use of dramatization. It leaves every scen open for examination and enterpretation withou forcing the viewer. It is pure story telling which comes close to a book. That could be a complain but every scene is masterfully directed and brings a lot of information without narrative explanation. While it is long film it never becomes boring once again because of direction, beautifull expresfull cinematography and convincing performances. Very well made.
Afcourse this is not enough for being great. What really lifts this film is very genuine scenes. I won't spoil them but I can say that I wouldn't have liked this film so much if not the final two minutes. It was the best ending and scene that I had seen in my life. Simply amazing.
La Dolce Vita truly deserves to be called one of the greatest achievements in history of filmaking. The absence of dramatization makes it completely outstanding.
