Review of L.A. Confidential (1997) by Nikan A — 19 Aug 2011
I like the movies that can entertain the pop corn lovers and serious audience . best of these form are : The Godfather , The Shawshank Redemption , American Beauty and this one.
The plot is based on a novel from James Ellroy . I don't know how much is the movie loyal to the Book , But at least I know it`s a penetrating and perfect screenplay .
The film`s Main theme is a bout urban Crimes of Los Angeles , maybe the most notorious City in movies. L.A confidential stands with "Chinatown" and "Blade Runner" as the most powerful L.A crime stories.
I think we are all agree that this movie has one of the best ensemble cast of a motion picture . there`s a unobtainable harmony between actors (specially three main characters) that I enjoy every time I watch it . Russell Crow and Guy Pearce , two Australian actor became famous in America , and they deserved it. Kim Basinger as a femme fatale is great and she won an academy awards for her role , and Kevin Spacey here is very good . Yes maybe he is not as great as he was in American Beauty or The Usual suspects , but this is very enjoyable to see him again as a different role for me . But I think the best actor is James Cromwell . he gives an unforgettable performance as Dudley Smith who is one of the most memorable movie Villains of all time. Danny DeVito is also good as a Hush Hush reporter that loves "Hollywood Stories".
I will plan to watch other movies from director Curtis Hanson . Maybe "wonder boys" or " in Her shoes" . I doubt if they are as great as this one . The thing that I know is this work , is great . one of those movies that you can not find any time any year . I watched it 3 times today and I enjoyed more and more.
Verdict : Great Casting , well-done making and entertainment story telling , all make L.A confidential one of the best motion pictures of all time that you can watch over and over again.
