Review of L.A. Confidential (1997) by Aakash K — 17 Apr 2012
L.A, Confidential is probably one of the best noir films ever made. The attention to detail, character development, dialogue, soundtrack, and atmosphere is just incredible. The film's story is really complex, but the characters are even more complicated. They are dominoes in a line, they all react to something. Just imagine that all the dominoes have a different amount of dots. Russell Crowe's Bud White reacts violently and aggressively, but with a clear conscience. Guy Pearce's Edmund Exley reacts disciplined. Kevin Spacey's Jack V. reacts by going ahead a different way, trying to be in the spotlight while doing not so good things.
The film involves 1950's L.A, which means the story involves a drug ring, a porn industry, corrupt officials, rainy days, suburban houses and shotguns.
Kim Basinger stars as the seductive prostitute, but even she has real feelings and a kind heart. She has to do with the characters as much as the story.
L.A. Confidential also has a dark comical side to it, but it's blended into the drama and investigations. This is a true film, one that will entertain me even years from now.
