Review of L.A. Confidential (1997) by Bloodmarsh K — 13 May 2012
Smart and stylish adaptation of Ellroy's dark novel about corruption in the City of Angels in the early boom years of the 50s. Great direction and editing. Good cast. This was the era when LA, not NYC, was seen as THE sophisticated place to be--but underneath there is violence, corruption, lies, in "the Business" and in the Police force, too. Forgotten by some, this film was nominated for 9 Oscars, it won two--for Best Screenplay (of a previous work) an Best Supporting Actress, Kim Basinger. Great direction by Curtis Hansen, great music and costumes as well.
Well edited. Good cameo appearance by Danny DeVito who plays a character who serves as a narrator of sorts of what the viewer should know is really going on in LA.
