Highly underrated film. A film noir which Hammett would be proud of. I still cannot believe LA Confidential lost to Titanic in most of the award shows because LA Confidential was so much better in ever way.
This film was also one of the ten best films about LA or based mostly in LA, high on the list with Chinatown and the Big Sleep. One of the best casts I've ever seen, with Kim Basinger, Kevin Spacey, Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, and James Cromwell.
It was amazing to see because this film showed Crowe as a great actor before he became the Australian version of Kevin Costner (without the directing credits). James Ellroy's story is intertwined perfectly with a great ending.
One of the films which I can see over and over again.
