Review of L.A. Confidential (1997) by Paul J — 25 May 2012
An excellent neo-noir that is complex, layered and suspenseful. An exceptional cast with outstanding writing. It explores corrupt cops, criminals, media, sexuality, violence and friendship with equal intelligence and bold twists and turns.
How many drafts must they have written? What's remarkable is that they manage to give Pearce, Spacey, Crowe and Basinger ALL such memorable and satisfying moments to shine. It's as if there's an entire TV series in here.
The only slight let-down, is they give us a happy ending with the flawed hero and femme fatale. Film Noir is supposed to end dark and bleak. That said, there's enough other ironic tragedy in the film to make it work.
A real achievement for smart audiences.
