Review of L.A. Confidential (1997) by Sam C — 29 May 2013

L.A. Confidential is an extremely well made film and is one of the best crime dramas I have ever seen. There is not one thing in this movie that I would change because to me the film is brilliant. At the 1998 Oscars L.

A. Confidential took home the award for Best Writing (Based on Material Previously Produced or Published) and it definitely deserved it. Brian Helgeland's and Curtis Hanson's screenplay is just absolutely stunning, everything in the writing is just so damn good.

One thing I love about this movie is that it has one big mystery but it also has a lot of drama and it just works perfectly. To me the mystery part of the film was done so well, I never saw were this film was going and each plot twist left me extremely satisfied.

The drama to this film was also done very well because it just feels so real and some of that is due to the well written dialogue. The dialogue in this film felt so real when it comes to those dramatic scenes but at times it's also very witty, this movie actually has quite a bit of dark humor which I found to fit the movie perfectly.

Another thing that the writing does so well is make you get into all of the main characters, I found all the characters to be fascinating because there all so different from each other. Also what makes the characters so interesting is the performances by the film's cast which I will get to in a bit.

You could really tell the Curtis Hanson was passionate about this film because he just did an amazing job at bringing everything together. He did a great job at telling the story, he made you feel as if you were in this time period, and he just did an outstanding job at directing his actors.

The acting in this movie is just phenomenal. Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, and Guy Pearce all give incredible performances along with the great supporting cast which includes Danny DeVito, James Cromwell, and Kim Basinger who won Best Supporting Actress that year as well.

Also this film does a great job portraying L.A. in the 50s because all the locations, sets, and costumes were just looked great and helped capture that feeling of L.A. in the 50s. Oh and you cant forget the music, both the soundtrack and Jerry Goldsmith's score fit the film beautifully.

Overall L.A. Confidential is an excellent film and is one I highly recommend seeing!
